BERKELEY HEIGHTS -- It is estimated that billions of pounds of electronic waste is dumped into our landfills each year, making it the fastest growing category of waste being added to our landfills. Summit Medical Group recently participated in an E-Waste Recycling Fundraiser, held by Summit Green to collect and properly dispose of old electronic equipment and assist local environmental efforts. On May 20 and 21, Summit Medical Group donated electronic waste to the fundraiser, including out-of-date computers, computer monitors, telephone equipment and medical equipment to the fundraiser. Summit Green teamed up with an electronics recycler to pick up, catalogue and recycle the old equipment in effort to raise both environmental awareness and funds for local environmental projects.
Electronic waste is that is not properly disposed of can leak harmful chemicals into landfills and potentially contaminate drinking water. Some of the hazardous components of electronics include mercury, cadmium, and lead. A typical computer monitor may contain 6% lead by weight. Serious environmental damage and human illnesses can be prevented to a great degree by properly de-manufacturing and proper recycling of electronic products.
