Berkeley Heights, NJ -- Winter brings with it a set of elements that have an effect on our routines. We turn off the air conditioning and turn on the heat. Coats and gloves protect our bodies from the cold, and we even cook different foods that are more comforting during the climate changes. It is only natural that the needs of our skin change with the climate. Follow these tips from Summit Medical Group to help keep your skin healthy through the winter months:

Exfoliate. Dryness and cold encourage the body to accumulate dead skin cells, creating ashy, dry skin. Daily gentle exfoliation, followed by a moisturizer, will keep skin smooth and healthy-looking. Consider peel treatments with a medical aesthetician to benefit from deeper exfoliation when the sun is not as strong and we aren’t outdoors as often.

Hydrate. Don’t forget your water. Heat in homes and workplaces takes moisture out of the body. Replacing it by d

rinking water is important for the body inside and out. Cold medicines can also dry out the skin. A balance of extra liquids while on any medication is important.

Protect. The skin is the largest organ of the body. Keeping it covered in the cold winter air will help reduce cracking and irritations that can lead to discomfort. Richer moisturizers and lip balms will help. Don’t forget that your daytime moisturizer should always include an SPF of 30. Sun damage occurs year round. Light reflects off the snow, causing UV damage.
