John Hurley, MD, and Stephen Kocaj, MD, open SMG office in Morristown
BERKELEY HEIGHTS – Summit Medical Group is pleased to announce that John Hurley, MD, and Stephen Kocaj, MD, have joined the Group’s Orthopedics Department.
John Hurley, MD, received his BS from Manhattan College, Riverdale, New York. He attended Manhattan College on a full Basketball Scholarship and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1976. He was named Varsity Basketball Team Captain in 1976 to the nationally ranked, top 20 NCAA-Division I team (1975, l976). He earned his Doctor of Medicine from New York University School of Medicine, New York, New York in 1980. He completed his Residency Training in Orthopaedic Surgery with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark, NJ. Hurley completed his fellowship training in Sports Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio mentored by Dr. John Bergfeld, Director of Sports Medicine and team physician for all of the professional sports teams in Cleveland, Ohio. Hurley was on the attending Orthopaedic staff at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and served as the Orthopaedic surgeon for the Detroit Lions and the Detroit Tigers until 1988. He remained in private practice until 2006 when he was appointed the first Medical Director of Sports Medicine at Atlantic Health System/Morristown Memorial Hospital.
Over the past twenty years, Hurley has been an active Orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports injuries of the knee and shoulder. He is Board Certified in both Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. His specialty interest is in Surgical Joint Restoration in young and middle-aged athletes including Lower Extremity Realignment Procedures, Meniscal Transplantation and Articular Cartilage Regeneration. Hurley serves as board member to the Sports Medicine Advisory Board for the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association. He is also a board member for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of New Jersey. He is active in the community, serving as the team physician for several universities and high schools in the Morris County Area.
Stephen Kocaj, MD, received his B.A. in biochemistry from Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT in 1996, where he was a 4 year member on Middlebury’s football and men’s lacrosse team. He earned his Doctor of Medicine in 2000 from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School, Newark, NJ. Kocaj completed his Orthopaedic Residency Training in 2005 at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, GA. While in Atlanta, he served as an assistant team physician for the Georgia Tech football and basketball teams.
He went on to complete a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, AL under the instruction of internationally renowned orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. James Andrews. He received specialized training in the arthroscopic treatment of shoulder, knee and elbow injuries, including shoulder and elbow injuries in the throwing athlete and elbow ligament reconstruction. He was an assistant team physician for the Alabama Crimson Tide, Jacksonville State Gamecocks, and the Birmingham Barons Baseball AA association.
Following his fellowship, Kocaj returned to Emory University where he worked as an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Atlanta’s Level I trauma center, gaining additional training in the treatment of fractures in the upper and lower extremity. For the past two years, he has been working as an orthopedic surgeon at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Kocaj is board certified in orthopedic surgery. He is a team physician for Fairleigh Dickinson University athletics. He has special interests in the treatment of injuries of the upper and lower extremities, including ligamentous injuries of the shoulder, elbow and knee and cartilage restoration of the knee.
