BERKELEY HEIGHTS -- Summit Medical Group is pleased to announce that David Schreck, M.D., has received the Fellow in Hospital Medicine (FHM) designation from the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM). SHM is the largest organization in the nation representing hospitalists and the practice of hospital medicine. It's mission is to promote the highest quality care for hospitalized patients, as well as provide opportunities and support to hospitalists. SHM is committed to enhancing the practice of hospital medicine by promoting education, research and advocacy
Summit Medical Group employs full-time physician hospitalists at nearby Overlook Hospital to coordinate care for Summit Medical Group patients while they are hospitalized. A Summit Medical Group hospitalist is an M.D. or D.O., board certified in internal medicine, who is available 24 hours a day and in frequent contact with your primary care physician. He or she can assist you when you are in the Emergency Room, In inpatient wards or in critical and intensive care units. Your hospitalist is also available to answer any questions and concerns your family may have.
“Because your hospitalist is dedicated to hospital care, he or she is familiar with all aspects of the hospital and able to streamline necessary tests and special consultations,” says Dr. Schreck, director of the hospitalist program at Summit Medical Group. “A hospitalist’s knowledge not only improves the stay time of a patient, but also the careful attention to interpersonal communication that can improve the quality and efficiency of care.”
To earn the FHM designation, an applicant must meet a set of diverse criteria. These criteria include being a hospitalist for five years, demonstrating dedication to quality and process improvement, illustrating commitment to organizational teamwork and leadership, and active engagement in lifelong learning and education. Dr. Schreck was 1 of 514 selected to be in this elite class.
Dr. Schreck earned a dual B.S. degree in chemistry and master’s degree in biomedical engineering-science in 1975 from Stevens Institute of Technology. In 1980 he completed his Doctor of Medicine degree at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. He completed a dual residency program in internal medicine and emergency medicine as a Visiting Clinical Fellow of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons at Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J. Dr. Schreck has more than 27 years of medical practice experience and serves as vice chairman of the Department of Medicine at Overlook Hospital. He is also a fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Schreck also serves as the Medical Director for the Department of Emergency and Hospital Medicine at Summit Medical Group. He is board certified in internal medicine and emergency medicine.
"We are proud to offer Dr. Schreck's talent and expertise to our patients," said Robert W. Brenner, MD, MMM, Chief Medical Officer of Summit Medical Group. "We congratulate him on this achievement and milestone in his career."
