BERKELEY HEIGHTS – Gary Pien, MD, PhD, has recently joined Summit Medical Group’s Allergy and Immunology department.
Dr. Pien earned his ScB magna cum laude in Biochemistry with Honors from Brown University, balanced with a minor in ancient Greek and Roman literature. He earned his combined MD/PhD degrees from Brown University School of Medicine with a doctorate in Immunology. Dr. Pien fulfilled his pediatric internship and residency at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Rhode Island. Dr. Pien completed fellowship training in Allergy/Immunology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania-Presbyterian Medical Center. His postdoctoral research investigated the host immune responses to AAV-mediated gene therapy for hemophilia. At Summit Medical Group, Dr Pien joins Dr Kerry Le Benger, allergy specialist and chair of Summit Medical Group's Department of Allergy/Immunology, who is named among Castle Connolly's list of Top Doctors, New York Metro area.


Before joining Summit Medical Group, Gary Pien, MD, PhD, was Attending Physician in the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In addition to his position with Summit Medical Group Allergy, Dr. Pien is an allergist and immunologist at Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey. His expertise includes immunologic diseases and deficiencies and pediatric allergies. The American Board of Allergy and Immunology and American Board of Pediatrics certify him in allergy/immunology and pediatrics, respectively.
A sought-after speaker, Dr. Pien has delivered local, regional, national, and international invited presentations concerning immunology. His research interests include new diagnostic approaches and treatments for asthma, food allergies, and anaphylaxis as well as new diagnostic testing and management of immune deficiencies. He is the author or coauthor of articles and abstracts concerning these and related topics, which are published in prestigious, peer-reviewed scientific journals such as Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Immunology, and Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Pennsylvania Allergy and Asthma Association, American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, and American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.

Dr. Pien is the recipient of 18 honors and awards, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science Excellence in Science Award and Hasbro Children's Hospital Excellence in Pediatric Emergency Department Award. Consumer's Research Council of America lists him in America's Top Pediatricians.
