If you are elderly or caring for an elderly family member, consider scheduling a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit for yourself or your loved one!
As of January 2011, new laws allow for an Annual Wellness Visit
after the first year of Medicare eligibility and annually thereafter.
The visit will focus on developing a prevention plan based on a patient's health and risk factors.
During the visit, a nurse practitioner with our Geriatric service will check:
- Blood pressure
- Body mass index
- Mood issues
- Memory problems
- Home safety
- Risk of falls
In addition, the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit will include review of medical history, surgical history, and family history as well as prescriptions and over-the-counter medications such as vitamins, minerals, and supplements. The practitioner also will take time to review lifestyle habits, including diet, exercise, alcohol consumption, and tobacco use.
The Annual Wellness Visit does not include a physical examination!
There is no deductible, no copay, and no coinsurance
for the Annual Wellness Visit;
however, lab work and diagnostics
that require a copay and Medicare Part B deductable
are not included.
Acute problems that are discovered during the Annual Wellness Visit will be addressed. Your practitioner will reschedule all nonurgent problems for a regular follow-up visit with the primary care doctor.
Copays and deductibles will apply to all follow-up visits.
