Breast Care Center Clinical Program Manager Carol Boyer, MSN, APN-C, CBPN-IC, AOCNS, has earned the prestigious Academy of Oncology Nurse Navigators Breast Cancer Navigator of the Year Award. Ms. Boyer's colleagues chose her for the honor from a group of 60 practitioners.
A certified breast nurse navigator, Ms. Boyer helped establish the Summit Medical Group Breast Cancer Navigator Program. She has been integral in helping the Breast Care Center earn its National Consortium of Breast Centers (NCBC) Quality Breast Center of Excellence Certification for its commitment to delivering the highest quality of breast health care.
Ms. Boyer has helped established 2 effective support groups for breast cancer patients:
- Support group for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients
- Support group for patients who are a year or more after diagnosis
The Summit Medical Group Breast Care Center is one of few breast centers in the nation. It is one of only two centers in New Jersey designated a National Consortium of Breast Centers Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence.
An oncology and board-certified gerontology clinical nurse specialist, Ms. Boyer has more than 25 years' experience in clinical nursing practice. She specializes in home care, hospice, oncology, and geriatrics. She has been an oncology clinician at Georgetown University Hospital, George Washington University Hospital, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and Overlook Medical Center. A gifted teacher, Boyer has been a nursing instructor at Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing and George Mason University School of Nursing. She was an adjunct faculty member at George Washington University. Her research interests include the study of a vaccine for brain tumors. She is Vice President of the Township of Berkeley Heights Board of Health.
The Academy of Oncology Nurse Navigators is the largest national specialty organization dedicated to improving patient care and quality of life by defining, enhancing, and promoting the role of oncology nurse and patient navigators. Founded in 2009, the organization now has more than 2,000 members. It provides a network for professionals involved and interested in patient navigation and survivor care services. The AONN develops best practices to improve patient access to care and quality of life.
