Summit Medical Group Allergist / Immunologist Gary Pien, MD, PhD, FAAP, FAAAAI,
has been appointed Director of Research
for the Summit Medical Group Clinical Trials Program!

Dr. Pien has been a member of the Summit Medical Group Research Committee since 2009. He is Principal Investigator and Subinvestigator for 3 clinical trials.

Dr. Pien earned his MD / PhD at Brown University, where his doctoral thesis focused on immune responses to viral infections. After completing his residency in pediatrics at Hasbro Children's Hospital, he completed his fellowship in allery and immunology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where his research focused on immune responses as a barrier to successful gene therapy.

Dr. Pien is the author or coauthor of articles that are published in prestigious, peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Clinical Investigation, Science, and Nature Immunology. Most recently, he and his colleagues published an article on the safety of influenza vaccination in patients with egg allergy.

Dr. Pien frequently speaks at regional, national, and international conferences, including the annual New Jersey American Academy of Pediatrics School Health Conference, American Society of Gene Therapy, and Society of Leukocyte Biology.

As our new Director of Research, Dr. Pien will help expand the Summit Medical Group Clinical Trials Program and increase its presence as a center for leading-edge novel therapies for patients. His enthusiasm for and extensive background in research make him ideal for his new position! 

In addition to his position at Summit Medical Group Allergy, Dr. Pien is an allergist and immunologist at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, New Jersey. His expertise includes pediatric allergies, immune deficiencies, and recurrent infections. He is board certified in allergy / immunology and pediatrics.

Until Dr. Pien's appointment, cardiologist Avi Kothavale, MD, FACC, was Director of Research for Summit Medical Group Clinical Trials since 2007. Through his dedicated and thoughtful approach, Dr. Kothavale helped develop a valuable relationship between Summit Medical Group and Altura, LLC, a research partner and health care / technology consulting group. He also structured the research compensation model, ensured that the Group engaged in valuable studies, enlisted the expertise of investigators who were ideal for each trial, and oversaw the program’s compliance with regulatory standards. Dr. Kothavale’s significant contributions greatly added to the success of the program and will have far-reaching positive effects for patients. In addition to continuing his cardiology practice, Dr. Kothavale is a member of the Summit Medical Group Board of Directors.
