Summit Medical Group welcomes Joseph T. Barmakian, MD, to Summit Medical Group Orthopedics and Hand Surgery.

Before joining the Group, Dr. Barmakian practiced privately for 18 years with the Orthopaedic Hand and Upper Extremity Center in Westfield and Metuchen, New Jersey. His expertise includes surgery of the hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, and shoulder.

Dr. Barmakian earned his BA in chemistry at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and he earned his MD with honors at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Rutgers Medical School in Piscataway. After graduating, he completed his internship in surgery at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at New York Orthopaedic Hospital/Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, where he was designated Chief Resident. Dr. Barmakian completed his fellowship in hand surgery at the Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopaedic Institute, also in New York City.

A fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Barmakian is a member of the New Jersey Orthopaedic Society, Union County Medical Society, Medical Society of New Jersey, and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He is the author of articles and abstracts that are published in Journal of Hand Surgery. He also has delivered local and national invited presentations in his field. Dr. Barmakian is listed in New Jersey Monthly's and Castle Connolly's "Top Doctors." He is board certified in orthopedics, with subspecialty certification in hand surgery.
