Summit Medical Group Former Chief of Cardiology Robert D. Slama, MD, FACC, has just joined the Group's Board of Directors. Dr. Slama has been Chairman of the Group's Cardiology service for more than 12 years. He is a member of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Consultant Medical Staff.

During his tenure as Chairman, Dr. Slama has expanded and strengthened the Cardiology service. He developed a state-of-the-art Cardiac Diagnostic Imaging Center, including a digital echocardiology laboratory for which he has been Medical Director. In addition, he was integral in developing a Nuclear Medicine Laboratory for which he has been Radiation Safety Office for the last 6 years. Dr. Slama also implemented a collaborative advanced practice nurse/physician assistant (APN/PA) program that added 6 associate providers to enhance patient access and cultivate a team approach to cardiac care. He recruited interventional cardiologist Daniel Schwartz, MD, and cardiac imaging specialists Avinash Kothavale, MD, and Sunil Mirchandani, MD. Most recently, Dr. Slama was a leader in acquiring and integrating The Heart Group of Millburn, New Jersey, into the Summit Medical Group practice.

Dr. Slama founded the award-winning Summit Medical Group Coumadin Clinic in 1999, a pioneering accomplishment at the time. From 1996 to 1998, he was Director of the Overlook Medical Center Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. For the last decade, he has been listed in Castle Connolly's "Top Doctors in New York Metro Area." 

Dr. Slama is board certified in cardiovascular diseases and internal medicine, with additional certifications in echocardiography and nuclear cardiology.

A valuable member of the Summit Medical Group Clinical Council, Dr. Slama has shared his knowledge and skills to help make strategic decisions that have positively influenced the Group's progress and growth. An active member of many of the Group's committees, he continues to be a leader of the organization.
