Robert W. Brenner, MD, MMM, Appointed Chief Medical Officer

Summit Medical Group (SMG) is pleased to announce the promotion of Medical Director, Robert W. Brenner, MD, MMM, to Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Brenner’s appointment will enhance SMG’s new corporate structure, which has been redesigned to support our aggressive growth strategy. In addition to continuing with his current responsibilities, he will oversee the integration of patient care, develop initiatives to improve patient outcomes, and enhance the value of health care at SMG.

Dr. Brenner joined SMG as Medical Director in September 2006. He oversees the advancement of Quality Improvement, Risk Management, and Employee Health. He also is responsible for Clinical Program Development, including SMG’s Integrated Behavioral Health Center, our Hospitalist and Urgent Care programs, Breast Health Center, Group-wide Preventive Medicine Live Well Program, Diabetes Live Well program, Executive and Occupational Health service, Evening Primary Care practice, and Clinical Trials. In addition, Dr. Brenner manages Organizational and Physician Development, including Provider Performance, Leadership Training, and Clinical Education. A spokesperson on the topic of health care reform, Dr. Brenner has been an invited guest on Fox News and In Full View. Most recently, Dr. Brenner was named in New Jersey Family magazine's "New Jersey's Favorite Kids' Docs."

Before joining SMG, Dr. Brenner was a lead hospital administrator with Atlantic Health System at Mountainside Hospital in Mountainside, New Jersey. He was Chairman of the Family Medicine Department and other hospital departments as well as several hospital-based practices. As Director the Mountainside Hospital Family Practice Residency Program, Dr. Brenner restructured the program to become one of the most competitive residencies in New Jersey. His professional experience also includes Director of the Outpatient Ambulatory Center and Associate Residency Director at Somerset Medical Center. Between 1994 and 1995, he was in private practice in Westfield, New Jersey.

Dr. Brenner earned his BA in psychology at the State University of New York in Buffalo, and his MD at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He completed his postdoctoral training at Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey, under the auspices of Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Brenner earned his MMM at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
