Surgeon Andrew A. Gumbs, MD, Joins SMG

Summit Medical Group is pleased to announce that Andrew A. Gumbs, MD, has joined its Surgical Oncology department. In addition to his position as Director of the Minimally Invasive Hepatic-Pancreatic-Biliary Surgery Program at Summit Medical Group, Dr. Gumbs is Professor of Endoscopic Digestive Surgery at the University of Genoa in Italy. He has privileges at Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey.
Dr. Gumbs was previously Director of Minimally Invasive Hepatobiliary Surgery and Surgical Associate Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery and Endoscopic Skills Fusion Laboratory at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has been Instructor of Clinical Surgery at Cornell-Weill Medical College, Instructor of Clinical Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgical Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
Dr. Gumbs earned his BA in archeologic studies at Yale University and his MD at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. After graduating, he completed his residency in surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was given the Teaching Award. He completed his fellowship in minimally invasive hepatobiliary surgery at Rene Descartes University/Institute Mutualiste Montsouris in Paris, France, his fellowship in minimal access surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, and his fellowship in pancreatic surgery at the University of Verona in Verona, Italy. Dr. Gumbs is board certified in general surgery and certified in laparoscopic surgery.
A sought-after speaker, Dr. Gumbs has delivered local, regional, national, and international invited presentations primarily devoted to minimally invasive surgical techniques for the liver, pancreas, and digestive organs. His articles and abstracts on these and related topics are published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals such as Cancer, Annals of Surgery, and Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Gumbs is a member of the editorial boards for Journal of Gastrointestinal Cancer, Global Journal of Surgery, Obesity Surgery, and Open Obesity Journal. He is an ad hoc reviewer for Surgical Endoscopy, Annals of Surgical Oncology, and Journal of the American College of Surgeons, to name a few. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, Society of Surgical Oncology, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, New York Surgical Society, and Physicians for Human Rights, among others. Dr. Gumbs is board certified in general surgery and certified in laparoscopic surgery.
A volunteer with Doctors Without Borders, Dr. Gumbs is Cofounder and Vice President of the Intercontinental Natural Orifice Endo-Laparoscopic Surgeons (iNOELS), which brings minimally invasive surgery to the developing world.
