Winnie M. Polen, DO, recently joined Summit Medical Group Surgical Oncology and the Breast Health Center. Dr. Polen specializes in diagnosing and managing benign and malignant breast conditions. Her expertise includes sentinel lymph node mapping, full axillary lymph node dissection, localized needle excisional biopsy, partial mastectomy, and total mastectomy. She also is adept at a wide range of breast biopsy procedures.

Before joining Summit Medical Group, Dr. Polen was an active duty officer and general surgeon for the Great Lakes Naval Medical Center and North Chicago Veterans Affairs Hospital in Great Lakes, Illinois. She also was Director of the Great Lakes Naval Breast Care Center, where she increased access to and expanded patient services. To her credit, Dr. Polen has consistently been rated among the top ten percent of Great Lakes Naval Medical Center physicians for her excellent patient service and satisfaction.

Dr. Polen earned her BS in biochemistry at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. After graduating, she completed her DO at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, her residency in general surgery at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and her fellowship in Breast Surgery at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Dr. Polen is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, American Society of Breast Surgeons, and Association of Women Surgeons. Involved in breast cancer research, she notes, "I'm committed to providing my patients with up-to-date surgical and techniques to achieve the best results."
