John D. Cunningham, MD, is Medical Director of the Summit Medical Group Breast Care Center. Devoted to evaluating and treating diseases of the breast, Dr. Cunningham specializes in minimally invasive breast core needle biopsy techniques to diagnose tissue, minimize scarring and pain, and reduce problems associated with surgical excisional biopsies. He performs ultrasound and mammographic stereotactic biopsies in a comfortable, state-of-the-art office under local anesthesia. He also performs breast lumpectomies, sentinal node biopsies, and mastectomies. Dr. Cunningham works closely with a multidisciplinary team of practitioners to optimize his patients' care and outcomes.
In addition to his position at Summit Medical Group, Dr. Cunningham is Attending Surgeon for Overlook Medical Center in Summit, New Jersey. He is Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He was previously Assistant Professor of Surgery for Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
A gifted speaker, Dr. Cunningham has delivered local, regional, and national invited presentations concerning a wide range of topics in surgical oncology. He is the author or coauthor of articles and abstracts, which are published in prestigious, peer-reviewed scientific journals such as Surgical Oncology, Annals of Surgical Oncology, and American Journal of Surgery. He is a member of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project as well as the Overlook Medical Center Breast Cancer Steering Committee, Cancer Committee, Cancer Executive Committee, and Surgical Care Review Committee. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons and diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, he is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, American Society of Breast Surgeons, and Union County Medical Society.
Dr. Cunningham is a recipient of more than 20 honors and awards, including the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Outstanding Cancer Liaison Award and Overlook Medical Center Clinical Excellence Physician Award. He is featured in Castle Connolly "Top Doctors: New York Metro Area" and "America's Top Doctors," as well as the Consumer's Research Council of America "America's Top Surgeons," New Jersey Life "Top Doctors for Women," and the 2011 and 2012 New Jersey Monthly "Top Doctors" listings.
