Robert Bell, MD, MA, FACS, has expertise in bariatric surgery for morbid obesity. Dr. Bell also specializes in minimally invasive laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease, gallbladder disease, esophageal motility problems, abdominal wall hernia repairs, and other gastrointestinal (GI) problems. A leader in bariatric surgery and minimally invasive surgery, he is among few surgeons in the New York metropolitan area who perform revisionary (corrective) obesity surgeries. In addition to his position at Summit Medical Group, Dr. Bell is Associate Professor of Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut.
Before joining Summit Medical Group, Dr. Bell was Founder and Medical Director of the Yale - New Haven Hospital Bariatric Surgery Program and Medical Director of the Yale - New Haven Hospital Minimally Invasive Surgery Program. To his credit, Dr. Bell also established and has been Director of the Yale Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship Program.
Dr. Bell is a member of the Society of Laparendoscopic Surgeons Bariatrics Interest Group Committee, American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Research Committee, and American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Communications Committee. He is a fellow of American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and American College of Surgeons and he is a member of the Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Association for Academic Surgery, New England Surgical Society, Connecticut State Medical Society, Society of University Surgeons, and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
Dr. Bell is the author or coauthor of articles, abstracts, and book chapters primarily devoted to bariatric surgery and minimally invasive surgery. His articles and abstracts are published in prestigious, peer-reviewed scientific journals such as Journal of the American College of Surgery, Obesity Surgery, Critical Care Medicine, and Surgical Endoscopy. He is an ad hoc reviewer for Journal of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons,Journal of the American College of Surgeons, and Journal of the American Medical Association, to name a few. In addition, Dr. Bell has been featured in videos demonstrating laparoscopic and endoscopic techniques that have been presented to the American College of Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. A sought-after speaker, Dr. Bell has delivered local, regional, national, and international invited presentations in his field.

"It's also gratifying to help patients with reflux disease, hernias, gallbladder disease, and intestinal problems through minimally invasive techniques," he adds.
Dr. Bell is the recipient of more than 18 academic honors and awards, including the Yale University School of Medicine Outstanding Surgical Teacher Award and Edward H. Storer, MD, Award for Excellence in Surgical Teaching. Dr. Bell graduated first in his medical school class. He is a Texas A & M University College of Medicine Gathwright Scholar.
