Robert I. Oberhand, MD, practices with Westfield ENT Surgical Associates at Summit Medical Group. Dr. Oberhand is Attending Physician at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, New Jersey. He also is Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark. He is a member of the Overlook Medical Center Patient Advisory Board and Patient Satisfaction Committee.

Before joining the Group, Dr. Oberhand practiced with Westfield Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgical Associates, PA, in Westfield, New Jersey. He has been a member of the Overlook Medical Center staff for 37 years. He also has practiced in Red Bank, New Jersey. His affiliations have included Riverview Hospital, Monmouth Medical Center, Bayshore Community Hospital, Muhlenberg Hospital, and Saint Barnabas Hospital. Dr. Oberhand has been a member of the New Jersey Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Board of Governors. He is Past President of the combined medical staff for all Atlantic Health hospitals. He is Former President, Vice President, and Treasurer of the Overlook Medical Center Medical Staff. He has been Chief of Surgery, Chief in the Section of Otolaryngology and Chairman of the Surgical Review, Operating Room, Performance Improvement, Medical Executive, and Joint Advisory Committees at Overlook Medical Center. He has been a member of the Overlook Medical Center Advisory Board, Chairman of the Medical Staff Leadership Committee, and a member of the Strategic Planning, Joint Ventures, Nominating, Executive, Information Systems, and Service Lines Committees for Atlantic Health. 

Dr. Oberhand is a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, American College of Surgeons, and American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Inc. He is a member of the American Rhinologic Society, American Audiology Society, American Council of Otolaryngology, New Jersey Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Board of Governors, New Jersey Society of Cosmetic Surgery, American Medical Association, Union County Medical Association, New Jersey Medical Association, New Jersey Oncology Society, American Society of Opthalmologic and Otolaryngologic Allergy, and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Interested in medicine at an early age, Dr. Oberhand began working at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City when he was only 14. He notes, "I was drawn to the ear, nose, and throat specialty because of its varied and challenging surgical procedures. He adds, "Although I no longer perform surgery, I enjoy the extra time I can now spend getting to know my patients. It's especially gratifying to work with them on complex problems such as balance disorders, facial pain, and allergic disorders."

When he is not working with his patients, Dr. Oberhand enjoys skiing, golfing, playing bridge, and working out. He is an art and opera enthusiast.

Summit Medical Group does not participate in Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Oxford Liberty, and certain other health insurance plans. If you wish to use your out-of-network benefits for Dr. Oberhand's services as a self-pay patient, you must:

  • Pay in full at the time you receive our services
  • Submit claim forms (that we give you) to your insurance company
  • Have your insurance company reimburse you

If you are unsure how much your out-of-network benefits cover, please call your insurance company for clarification before you receive our health care services.

If you have a secondary insurance company with whom we participate:

  • You will not be asked to pay in full when you receive our services
  • We will give you a claim form that you will give your primary nonparticipating insurance company
  • Your primary insurance company will reimburse you
  • Once you are reimbursed, you will pay Summit Medical Group in full and give us a copy of your Explanation of Benefits 
  • Summit Medical Group will then submit the balance of your claim to your participating secondary insurance company
