What is this medicine used for?

This medicine is used on the skin to treat symptoms caused by the herpes virus. It does not cure herpes, but it relieves pain and discomfort and promotes healing of sores. This medicine is also used to treat cold sores. It may be used for other conditions as determined by your healthcare provider.

What should my healthcare provider know before I take this medicine?

Before using this medicine, tell your healthcare provider if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any medicine.

Females of childbearing age: Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not breast-feed while taking this medicine without your healthcare provider's approval.

How do I use it?

Keep this medicine away from your eyes.

Check the label on the medicine for directions about your specific dose. For best results, use the medicine as soon as symptoms appear. Gently rub a thin layer of the medicine into the sores until the medicine disappears. To avoid spreading the infection, use disposable gloves to apply the medicine. Wash your hands with soap and water before and after using this medicine.

Use this medicine for as long as your healthcare provider prescribes, even if your symptoms improve. Do not use it longer than prescribed.

Do not share this medicine with others or use it for other infections unless your healthcare provider approves.

What if I overdose?

An acute overdose of this medicine is not likely to cause life-threatening symptoms. If you think that you or anyone else may have taken too much of this medicine, call the poison control center at 800-222-1222.

What should I watch out for?

Use of this medicine alone will not keep the infection from spreading. Genital herpes is spread by sexual intercourse. Use a condom while sores are present. Check with your healthcare provider about what precautions to take.

Keep the affected area clean and dry. Wear loose clothing to allow ventilation and prevent further irritation.

Contact your healthcare provider if your symptoms do not improve in a few days or if they get worse.

What are the possible side effects?

Along with its needed effects, your medicine may cause some unwanted side effects. Some side effects may be very serious. Some side effects may go away as your body adjusts to the medicine. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that continue or get worse.

Other: Itching; rash; mild pain, burning, or stinging when you use the medicine.

What products might interact with this medicine?

No significant drug interactions have been reported.

Keep a list of all your medicines with you. List all the prescription medicines, nonprescription medicines, supplements, natural remedies, and vitamins that you take. Be sure that you tell all healthcare providers who treat you about all the products you are taking.

How should I store this medicine?

Store this medicine at room temperature. Keep the container tightly closed. Protect it from heat, high humidity, and bright light.
