Genital Injury

What is a genital injury?

A genital injury is a bruise or cut around the genital area. They are usually minor bruises (with swelling) or cuts that heal in 3 or 4 days.

How can I take care of my child?

For minor cuts, wash the area vigorously with soap and water for 5 minutes. Then apply pressure for 10 minutes with a sterile gauze to stop bleeding. For bruising or swelling, apply a cold, wet compress or ice for 20 minutes (if tolerated). Give acetaminophen or ibuprofen as needed for pain relief. Don't use aspirin because it may prolong the bleeding.

When should I call my child's healthcare provider?

Call IMMEDIATELY if:

  • Your child has a genital injury.
