Cardiac Electrophysiology

Cardiac electrophysiology is the study of the electrical system of the heart. If your heart beats too slowly, too quickly, or irregularly, an electrophysiologist with expertise in the electrical function of the heart can perform tests to identify the cause of the problem and determine which treatment is right for you.

Each time your heart beats, special cells known as sinus node cells signal the heart to contract, or beat, regularly and at a rate that ensures your body gets the oxygen-rich blood it needs. When the electrical system in the heart is not working properly, however, the heart cannot pump enough blood for good circulation throughout the body.

  • Procedures that help detect and correct abnormal heart rhythms include:
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) recording and monitoring
  • Event monitor testing
  • Holter monitor testing
  • Permanent pacemaker implantation and transtelephonic pacemaker follow up
  • Antiarrhythmic drug therapy

Ask your Summit Medical Group cardiologist for more information about electrophysiology testing and procedures or if you need a referral to an electrophysiologist.
