About Pacemakers
A pacemaker is a small, lightweight, electronic device that is implanted inside the body to monitor heartbeats. When the heart does not beat correctly, the pacemaker generates electrical signals to keep the heart beating at a normal rate and rhythm. People need a pacemaker when temporary, intermittent, or persistent conditions interfere with the heart's ability to produce and distribute normal electrical signals.

Although pacemaker batteries generally last 5 to 10 years before they must be replaced, regular evaluations are necessary to ensure the pacemaker is working properly.

The Summit Medical Group Pacemaker Clinic provides the highest standard of care to help patients maintain and extend the life of their pacemakers. We also can reprogram pacemaker settings when they need adjusting. Because even subtle adjustments can have a positive effect on a patient's quality of life, our staff are highly trained to fine tune each patient's pacemaker so that it provides the greatest benefit.

We also offer in-depth education for patients with pacemakers and their families.

Experts who are trained in all aspects pacemakers, including cardiologists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and medical assistants supervise the Pacemaker Clinic.

What to Expect
Patients with pacemakers should have an evaluation every 6 to 12 months. Frequency of visits is based on each patient's individual needs, age and type of pacemaker, and the physician's recommendations. Some patients subscribe to a telephone monitoring service known as transtelephonic monitoring. In the comfort of their homes, this service allows patients to use the telephone to send information about the pacemaker's programming and battery power to cardiologists at Summit Medical Group.

Clinic visits may include a medical history update, blood pressure check, X-ray, echo- or or electrocardiogram, and a stress test.
