Summit Medical Group performs hand surgery for patients in New Jersey and New York that involves diagnosing and repairing problems of the fingers, hands, wrists, and forearms such as:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Wrist pain
  • Hand pain
  • Difficulty with extending or straightening the fingers (Dupuytren's contracture)
  • Severe cuts on the fingers and hands
  • Sports injuries of the hands and wrists
  • Congenital deformities such as fused fingers (syndactyly) and extra fingers (polydactyly)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Hand surgery is a type of orthopedic surgery that repairs the bones and joints. It also can help treat burns and injuries to the soft tissues, including the tendons, nerves, and blood vessels.

Joseph Barmakian, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon and Reza Momeni, MD, FACS, is a plastic surgeon. They are experienced in all types of hand surgery and use the most advanced techniques and equipment. Their techniques can include skin, tissue, bone, and nerve grafting as well as replantation and transplantation of amputated fingers. Even in difficult cases, our expert doctors can usually restore feeling, function, and a natural appearance to your hands.

Your Hand Surgery Consultation
During your consultation, your surgeon will make you aware of your surgical options. He also will discuss limits and risks of hand surgery and address your expectations and concerns. He will review your medical history and examine your hands, wrists, and forearms.

Your Procedure
Hand surgery is highly individualized. No procedures are the same. Your hand surgeon will explain your case so that you know what is required to repair your hands and restore function and appearance.

Recovery and Results From Hand Surgery
Since every hand surgery is different, the results that your orthopedic surgeon and/or plastic surgeon expect will depend on your needs. The time you need to recover also will depend on your specific needs.

After your surgery, your hand surgeon will give you detailed instructions about how long your hand must be immobilized and when you can safely resume your activities. He or she also will prescribe physical and occupational rehabilitation with a trained hand therapist. Your hand rehabilitation therapy will allow you to achieve as much use of your hands as possible.
