Face and Neck Lift
Face- and necklift (rhytidectomy) can help rejuvenate the face, giving it a more youthful, rested look. During the procedure, fatty tissue, muscle, and skin around the jaw line, neck, and cheeks as well as creases around the mouth are tightened. The extent of the procedure will depend on your individual needs and desires.
Consultation
Consultation for a face and necklift includes a thorough discussion of your desires, expectations, and concerns as well as limits and risks of the surgery. He or she also will take pictures of and carefully examine your face and neck. The surgeon will review your medical history and recommend options that would be suitable for you. To create polished, balanced results, face- and necklift often is performed in conjunction with other procedures. Ask your surgeon what options will yield the best results for you.
Candidates
Men and women who have wrinkles and sagging skin on the face and neck, but whose skin has retained some elasticity, are ideal for a face- and necklift. People with a well-defined bone structure can have exceptional results. Most face- and necklift candidates are between 40 and 70 years of age and experiencing defects and imperfections that are typical with aging.
The Procedure
Patients who undergo face- and necklift surgery are usually given general anesthesia. Patients often stay overnight. After the dressings have been changed the day after surgery, most patients are allowed to go home.
Recovery and Results
If you are going to have face- and necklift surgery, you will be given thorough written instructions to prepare for and recover from your procedure. Sutures are removed in the office usually between the fifth and eighth days after surgery. Most patients describe having little discomfort after the procedure.
Although it may take several months to enjoy the final results, the majority of bruising and swelling subside within 2 to 3 weeks. Your surgeon’s office will schedule periodic visits during the first year after surgery to examine your progress.
After healing is complete, patients appear well rested and rejuvenated. Scars are rarely visible. Although the results following a face- and necklift are long lasting, some people may consider an additional procedure to retighten the face after 5 to 10 years.
