John "Joao" Lopes, MD, FACS, is a member of Summit Medical Group’s Bariatric (weight loss) Surgery team. Dr. Lopes performs a wide range of general and minimally invasive surgical procedures and has expertise in general and advanced laparoscopic surgery which includes gallbladder disease, cancers of the stomach, small intestines, and colon (diverticulitis), weight loss surgery, hernias of the abdominal wall and tumors located in the abdomen.

From an early age, Dr. Lopes had a passion for helping others, and his volunteer work as an EMT as a young adult solidified that passion. “As a doctor, helping my patients live their best life is the most rewarding experience,” says Dr. Lopes.

Dr. Lopes spends ample time with each patient and their family answering questions and treating them as he would want his own family to be treated saying, “I listen to the concerns of my patients and present the pathology in a clear manner so he or she can make an informed decision on the plan of care that will work best for them.”

During his surgical residency, Dr. Lopes was author to several published research studies and articles in surgical journals. He is a Board-Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery in the General Surgery American Medical Association. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of various medical organizations, including the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgery, American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and The Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma. Dr. Lopes has been honored with the title of Americas Top Surgeon for several consecutive years.

When not taking care of patients, Dr. Lopes can be found fishing in the summer and playing ice hockey with his son in the winter.
