IN THE NEWS – SMG Interventional Radiology
Dr. Waseem Bhatti, Medical Director of Imaging at Summit Medical Group MD Anderson Cancer Center, was recently quoted in the September issue of Radiology Today, a publication that reports on the latest news and information affecting radiologists, radiology administrators, and technologists. In an article titled, "More With Less", Dr. Bhatti discusses his perspectives on dosing.
"When a patient undergoes a CT scan, they deserve to have the highest-quality scan using the lowest dose possible. The ALARA principle of responsible dose management guides our approach," Bhatti says. "We also fully participate in the Image Gently campaign to reduce pediatric CT dose. Our equipment helps us adhere to these principles by giving us the tools necessary to limit dose while producing high-quality images."
What is Interventional Radiology?
Interventional Radiology is the most advanced technology available to perform image-guided procedures to treat a wide range of diseases and is often part of a diagnosis and treatments protocol for patients diagnosed with cancer, non-invasive cardiac diagnosis and stroke assessment. An IR procedure is performed with small instruments that enter the body through a small nick in the skin or tiny incision, a minimally invasive technique that minimizes risk to the patient. The Interventional Radiologist expertly guides these instruments using imaging similar to X-rays and ultrasound. Overall, these procedures are less invasive, less painful, safer, and offer shorter recovery times to patients than standard surgery options. Through this conveniently accessed, best-in-class technology, we will ensure optimal care for our patients in our own community and beyond.
WHAT IS uterine artery embolization?
Uterine artery embolization is a minimally invasive treatment for uterine fibroids, noncancerous growths in the uterus. In uterine artery embolization — also called uterine fibroid embolization — a doctor uses a slender, flexible tube (catheter) to inject small particles (embolic agents) into the uterine arteries, which supply blood to your fibroids and uterus. The goal is to block the fibroid blood vessels, starving the fibroids and causing them to shrink and die.
