Treatment Options for Acute and Chronic Pain

Our multidisciplinary approach to health care at Summit Health is designed to effectively treat and manage short-term pain, long-term pain, or chronic pain. Everyone’s pain is different and affects many aspects of an individual’s life, including energy, mood, work, sleep, relationships, and self-esteem. For this reason, we work to treat the whole patient and not just their symptoms. Through close collaboration with primary care doctors and specialists, our team can determine which treatment options will ensure the best outcome and develop an effective program tailored to meet each patient’s unique needs, help restore function, and improve overall quality of life.

Treatment May Include:

Acupuncture for Pain Management
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese form of alternative medicine that is used to treat a wide range of conditions, including back and neck pain, osteoarthritis pain, and even headaches. During the process, our experts insert thin needles into the skin stimulating nerves which prompts a release of energy.

Steroid Injections for Pain Management
Patients with neck, arm, back, and leg pain may benefit from a minimally invasive procedure such as an epidural steroid injection (ESI).ESI is a minimally invasive procedure that helps to relieve neck, arm, back, and leg pain. Through careful injection, medicine is delivered to the fat-filled area between the bone and the protective sac of spinal nerves, relieving pain for days, months, and possibly years.

Physical Therapy for Pain Management
Physical therapy is the rehabilitative process of restoring physical function and mobility in order to achieve an individual’s highest level of physical function. Our physical therapy team specializes in the rehabilitation of orthopedic and sports-related injuries in pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients. Learn More.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Pain Management
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a specific form of psychotherapy that helps manage the negative emotions and thoughts that physical pain can bring. This short-term treatment that is administered in individual and group formats has been shown to reduce the perception of pain and increase mood. This along with mindfulness interventions and support groups may be incorporated into your comprehensive pain management program.

Additional Modes of Treatment May Include:

Facet joint injections, sacroiliac joint injections, radiofrequency ablation, medial branch blocks, selective nerve root blocks, lumbar sympathetic blocks, spinal cord stimulation and/or kyphoplasty

What to Expect

Our goal is to provide an individualized treatment approach to cater to a patient’s specific diagnosis and needs. In order to successfully achieve this goal, patients can expect a comprehensive initial evaluation. This initial consultation includes a thorough physical examination to allow for an accurate diagnosis.

It would be helpful to bring any prior medical records or imaging to the first appointment. The next step in care ultimately depends on diagnosis as well as individual lifestyle and may include additional testing, medications, injections, or coordination of care with other specialists. This catered, multifaceted treatment plan allows patients to improve, increase functionality, and ultimately achieve their goals.
